If you are doing Carnivore but can’t eat a plain can of sardines (yet), then try this sardine fish cake recipe. These sardine cakes are firm in texture and are great for breakfast or as an appetizer.

This recipe is similar to our Carnivore salmon cake recipe which features canned salmon instead of canned sardines.

⭐️ CANNED SARDINES: Using Brunswick sardines in spring water.

⭐️ WHOLE EGG: Choose high quality eggs such as free-range, or grass-fed and organic.

⭐️ PORK GELATIN POWDER: Using the KNOX brand, but any gelatin powder, including beef gelatin, will work. Helps bind the cake so it has a firm texture that does not fall apart.

⭐️ PORK PANKO OR PORK RINDS: If you are doing keto, you can substitute for almond flour on a 1:1 basis.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR FINDING CANNED SARDINES


TIP #1: Opt for sardines in spring water. If you cannot find sardines in spring water, try to find the version packed in olive oil. We are using the Brunswick sardines in this recipe which is economical; other high quality brands include King Oscar and Wild Planet.

HOW TO STORE LEFTOVERS FOR SARDINE CAKES


FRIDGE

If you have leftover sardine cakes, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. You can reheat them in the oven or a skillet to maintain their crispiness.

Yes, you can freeze sardine cakes for longer storage. Place them in an airtight container or freezer bag, separating each cake with parchment paper to prevent sticking. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.

Yes, you can use fresh sardines for sardine cakes. Just make sure to clean and debone the fresh sardines before using them in your recipe. Canned sardines are a convenient option because they are already cooked and deboned.

👉 How else can I customize these sardine fish cakes?

Traditional ingredients added to sardine cakes for flavor include breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped onions, bell peppers, fresh herbs (like parsley), garlic, lemon juice, and various spices. Other than breadcrumbs which will add carbs to the dish, you can add these ingredients in to your taste.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 can sardines, drained (approximately 3 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon pork panko
  • 1 teaspoon pork gelatin powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt and pepper
  • 1 teaspoon beef tallow

Instructions
 

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the drained sardines, whole egg, pork gelatin powder, and pork panko. Mix everything together until well combined.
  • Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Keep in mind that sardines are already salty in nature, so be cautious with the salt.
  • Heat beef tallow in a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Form the sardine mixture into patties or cakes of your desired size. You can make small appetizer-sized cakes or larger ones for a main course.
  • Place the sardine cakes in the hot oil and fry them for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. Be gentle when flipping the cakes to avoid breaking them.
