Sardine Salad with Egg

This sardine salad with eggs is a nutritious and easy dish that combines the rich taste of canned sardines with the creaminess of eggs and avocado mayonnaise. Only takes 15 minutes to make and can be packed for lunches or made for breakfast!

If you are new to sardines or looking to incorporate them into your diet, this is a simple way to start trying them. If the fishy flavour of sardines makes you hesitate trying them, I would recommend adding some sort of acid (capers, lemon juice, lime juice, or pickles) to help balance out the flavour.

⭐️ CANNED SARDINES: Opt for sardines in spring water, if possible.

⭐️ PICKLES: Dill pickles or regular pickles add great acidity to the dish. You can substitute pickles for canned capers, which provide a similar “tangy” flavour.

⭐️ AVOCADO MAYO: Chosen Foods or Primal Kitchen are recommended. You can also use bacon grease. If you use regular mayonnaise, try to find one with the cleanest ingredients possible.

⭐️ YELLOW MUSTARD: Dijon mustard can be used as a substitute

⭐️ WHOLE EGG: Opt for free-range or grass-fed, if possible. The yolks of higher quality eggs are always more yellow and have a creamier flavour, making them great for any egg salad variation such as this sardine salad.

STEP 1: Combine all ingredients in a bowl.


TIP #1: If time allows, cover the sardine salad after making and let rest in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving, allowing for all the flavours to combine together.

TIP #2: If your diet allows, feel free to customize the recipe by adding additional ingredients like onions, chopped celery, capers, olives, or herbs to suit your taste.

This meal will likely produce leftovers as it is such a large cut of meat! When storing this meat, use an air-tight container and add the juices directly into the container. This will ensure that the meat retains as much moisture as possible and does not dry out.


Store for up to 7 days. To reheat, heat on high in the microwave for 5 minutes or in an oven-safe dish at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Omit the pickles and condiments (mustard, mayo) to your dietary tolerance. Substitute the condiments for bacon grease if you are attempting pure carnivore for elimination purposes.

Sardine Salad with Eggs & Pickles

  • 1 whole egg, boiled
  • 1 can sardines, drained
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard or dijon mustard
  • 1 whole dill pickle (2-3" long), sliced
  • 1 tablespoon avocado mayonnaise
  • 1 pinch salt, to taste
  • 1 pinch black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley or chives, to garnish (optional)


  • Boil egg on stovetop until desired doneness of yolk is reached, about 5-7 minutes for medium doneness and 8-10 minutes for a hard boiled egg.
  • Drain the sardines and placing them in a medium mixing bowl. Use a fork to break the sardines into smaller pieces.
  • Add the chopped hard-boiled eggs and pickles to the bowl with the sardines.
  • In a separate small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and lemon juice until well combined.
  • Pour the mayonnaise mixture over the sardine and egg mixture in the large bowl.
  • Gently fold all the ingredients together until everything is well coated with the dressing. Be careful not to overmix, as you want to keep some texture in the salad.
  • Taste mixture and add any salt or pepper to taste.
  • Optional – Garnish the sardine egg salad with chopped fresh parsley or dried parlsey for a pop of color and added flavor.
  • Optional – Cover the bowl and refrigerate the salad for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together before serving.
